Can Cau Market
Can Cau Market

Mường Hoa Valley · Sa Pa

Near the Chinese border, the region’s largest buffalo market; authentic and raw.

A raw and rugged encounter. Set on the terraced slopes near the Chinese border, Can Cau is one of the region’s most authentic markets. As the region’s largest buffalo market, it has stayed clear of modern commercialism. Experience ‘real’ Sa Pa heritage: ethnic-minority men bargaining over buffalo and horses, while women in breathtaking costumes barter local spices and mountain honey. The ultimate stop for photographers and those seeking the heart of the mountains.

Good to know

Best season

Spring and autumn are usually the best times; depending on the season the terraces are flooded, lush green or golden with harvest.

Spring · Mar–May

Usually dry and cool, trails are clear. In May–June the terraces fill with water and shimmer.

Summer · Jun–Aug

Terraces are lush green; during the monsoon expect rain and mud with slippery trails.

Autumn · Sep–Nov

Dry, cool and clear again. Early September to mid-October is usually the golden harvest.

Getting to Sa Pa

From Hanoi you can take the night train to Lào Cai (about 8 hours) and cover the last ~35 km by transfer, or reach Sa Pa by sleeper bus / limousine van via the expressway in roughly 5.5–6 hours. Sa Pa sits at about 1,500 m; valley walks are mostly between 900–1,550 m, so serious altitude issues aren't usually expected.
